Waiting for the Next Wave

This comic began its life on the radio waves. Airing in the summer of 2022 on epidemiologist Dr. Michael Osherholm’s COVID-19 report, I wrote the original script for the “Beautiful Place” segment in the wake of finishing my first full length graphic memoir Going Remote: A Teacher’s Journey (also with artist Peter Glanting for The Censored Press/Seven Stories Press).

After plumbing the depths of my pandemic journey as a patient, professor, partner and parent in Going Remote, I felt a deep sense of appreciation for the present moment—that not only was the book finished, but much more importantly, that our little family had made it through. I wanted to capture this specific moment, this specific feeling of gratitude, and place it in a visual container to open later, when the drumbeat of everyday family and work life might wash it away. To do this, the comic is built extensively on real photos which I (or my partner) took while on one of our many trips to the edge of San Francisco, ones Peter lovingly illustrated.

Going Remote: A Teacher’s Journey is recently published.
